Spider-Man, the first costume worn by Tobey Maguire in the film was built… in a former pornographic studio!

In the book With Great Power: How Spider-Man Conquered Hollywood During the Golden Age of Comic Book Blockbusterswritten by Sean O’Connell (general manager of CinemaBlend) and containing a detailed reconstruction of all the film and television transpositions of theSpidermannumerous unpublished background stories on the adaptations dedicated to the wall climber have been collected.

In the fifth chapter of the book – which we bought and that we’re going through chapter by chapter – met on the making of the first film of Spider-Man directed by Sam Raimi in 2002, the costume designer James Achesonthree times winner of theOscars to the best costumes for The last emperor (1988), for The dangerous liaisons (1989) for Restoration – Sin and punishment (1996), spoke in detail about the creation of the costume worn by Tobey Maguire. Specifically, Acheson confessed that Spider-Man’s first movie suit was built in a former pornographic studio not far from Santa Monica Blvd, California:

“’We built the first Spider-Man suit, or should I say the sculpt for the suit, in a small space just off Santa Monica Boulevard that it turned out to be a former porn studio called ‘The G-Spot.’ Acheson recalled with a laugh.”

In addition, the chapter explains that the indecision of the casting department as to which actor would play Peter Parker – before the signing of Maguire – caused some “significant delaysin the costume department for the film. Interviewed by O’Connell about the book, Acheson recalled that at the time he was busy solving the problems associated with bringing a practical version of the Spidey suit to the screen, including act and fight with the face totally covered by a mask:

“I think they didn’t realize that Spider-Man has no mouth until they started spinning.”
