Motivation and study method, the innovative project IIS “Palma” to promote the educational success of students | EcodelloJonio.it

CORIGLIANO-ROSSANO – Teachers trained to stimulate students’ acquisition of an effective study method, learning to better organize school work and enhancing study motivation. These are the main objectives of the planning activity launched by the “Luigi Palma” higher education institute of Corigliano-Rossano which, divided into several phases, will continue until the end of the school year. It is a real path, based on the centrality of the students, which kicked off on Tuesday 17 January at the institute’s Auditorium, with a training seminar aimed at teachers held by Dr. Natalia Altomari, research fellow in didactics and special pedagogy at the University of Calabria.

An innovative project strongly desired by the headteacher Dr. Cinzia D’Amico who, after experimentation during the past school year, has the dual purpose of offering qualified training to the teaching staff and to lead students to reflect on their own way of learning addressing weaknesses and enhancing strengths. The laboratory activities that will follow one another in the coming months are in fact aimed at students, especially those in the first two years, as part of the project entitled “Promoting metacognitive skills in secondary school: a path on the method of study”, after the initial administration of two questionnaires – on the approach to studying (Battery Amos) and on motivation – prepared by the expert trainer. Various topics will be addressed during the workshops, including the organization of personal work, self-assessment skills, preparation strategies for a test and metacognitive sensitivity. The final administration of further questionnaires, the analysis and the return of the data will then follow.

«The approach to study is essential for the success of our students – says the school director Dr. Cinzia D’Amico – both in the school field and in their global growth path. As we have seen over the years, kids are often disoriented and insecure, which risks fueling a demotivation process that leads to failure. Several studies by professionals in the sector demonstrate how awareness and, consequently, the ability to self-assessment are invaluable resources for adapting teaching practices and promoting educational success, which is the main objective of every educational community. Hence – concludes the DS – the school’s willingness to invest in this innovative project activity, in collaboration with Unical, which through the various insights will allow us to identify with greater precision the characteristics of each student and his specific needs, in on the basis of which teachers will be able to put into practice targeted didactic interventions”.
