With the school project called “Mayan Science: the surprising discoveries of the Chichen Itza Castle”, two students and a teacher from the Valentín Gómez Farías elementary school, in Oxkutzcabare having an outstanding participation in the XIII Science and Technology Fair (Fecitec) Sunflowers Paraguay 2022.
“We are doing extremely well, it has been one of the most creative and innovative projects and has attracted a lot of attention because it is very interactive and playful; They come from children and teachers to see the exhibition that has had very good comments”, said Prof. Fredy Gongora Cabrera.
Proudly wearing a multicolored huipil, representative of the State of Yucatán, Evelyn Noemí Lugo Góngora and Andrea Gabriela Burgos Magaña, 11 and 12 years old, respectively, exhibit the Mayan science project using a movable model that replicates the descent of Kukulcán into the Chichen Itza pyramid.
Góngora Cabrera, adviser to the pair of Yucatecan students from the Huerta del Estado, stated that the school project aims to publicize the findings in one of the Seven Wonders of the World, from two different positions: through the scientific method and from the Mayan worldview.
“Through the scientific method, the findings about the cenote and the two pyramids that are under the Castle are made known and it is contrasted with the Mayan worldview to give answers to the unknowns. In this case, Evelyn uses the scientific method and Andrea the Mayan worldview”, he referred.
The teacher pointed out that another of the objectives of the proposal is to demonstrate that science is not boring and that girls can also be interested and motivated by this discipline, shortening the inequality gap that exists and promoting the participation of women in research.
Regarding his participation in the Latin American fair, he specified that they are having very good comments and are capturing the attention of the attendees, including several media outlets, including Paraguayan television programs, have taken advantage of recording and documenting the exhibition.
“They are amazed at how creative and innovative the project is; we are amazed, regardless of whether any award or recognition is obtained, I think it has had an impact and that is the result, taking culture to unimaginable places and learning about science and research”.
Likewise, he added that regarding the event, the jury will not only take into account the striking or spectacular nature of the project, but also the application of the scientific method that is developed. “In general terms, we are doing very well and on Saturday they will announce the results, for now we are very happy,” concluded the professor.
