Faced with environmental and public health challenges, the company Eco CO2 set up in 2021 the “Moby at school” device. A two-year program dedicated to student travel between home and school. It aims to offer alternatives to the individual car.
Intercom Bernay Terres de Normandie involved the primary schools of Serquigny, La Barre-en-Ouche (Mesnil-en-Ouche), Montreuil-l’Argillé, and the Jean-Moulin school in Bernay. Each has its own strengths and problems, scrutinized by the Permanent Center for Environmental Initiatives Terres de l’Eure/Pays d’Ouche (CPIE27), provider of the study through its two project managers, Laure Messner and Margaux Villebrun.
“Following a launch event in May 2021, we set up Moby committees, and carried out exploratory walks, to analyze the strengths and needs in terms of infrastructure. In Bernay, two of these walks were led by children from the Leisure Center and by the CE1 students of the director, Carole Cribier. A questionnaire made it possible to refine the analysis. However, he only received 15% of responses,” indicates Margaux.
Cycling and pedibus infrastructures
Among the lessons to be learned, the Jean-Moulin school points to a need to secure daily journeys, a lack of infrastructure for cycling and a lack of parking spaces.
The relocation of Le Hameau college has in any case relieved traffic congestion. Margaux and Laure focus on raising awareness through classroom activities, where the children pass on the lessons to their parents.
“We will also set up, in the spring of 2023, the La Rue aux enfants operation. On that day, the school street will be closed to car traffic, giving way to various activities, including a bicycle repair shop,” adds the young woman.
The Jean-Moulin school Moby committee is also counting on the creation of a pedibus, a kind of pedestrian shuttle, supervised by a parent or an agent.
